Regional Italian Presidents and Delegates at closing ceremony
In its fifteenth year, the Italian International Training Summer School, was successfully held in regions across Italy from July 15th to 26th, 2024. The conference, titled “Survey for Planning New Technologies and Land Protection,” featured a sub-theme on “Archaeology and Architecture- the future has an ancient heart.”
At the invitation of President Paolo Biscaro, Consiglio Nazionale Geometri e Geometri Laureati (CNG), and Enrico Rispol (FIG Honorary Member), Secretary of CNG, FIG President Diane Dumashie, was invited to attend the closing days of the 2024 summer school program. |
Held over two weeks, this innovative international summer school concept has proven its value in building future leaders in our profession and imparting cutting-edge knowledge often in inspirational settings. The program was pioneered by Enrico Rispoli (CNG) and Prof Pietro Grimaldi, University of Comitato Internazionale Fotogrammetria Architerttonica (COIFA), who also serves as the key lead organizer of the Summer School program.
With outreach to the international community of young surveyors, the program has grown significantly over the years. At its peak it hosted up to 500 delegates, with at least half from the international young surveying community. This year, international delegates came from Latin America, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia. Thanks to FIG Foundation who also supported attendees.
The Italian National Council comprises regional provincial boards from across Italy. To emphasize the importance of cross-regional collaboration, each year the 2 week long program rotates to different regions, thereby engaging with local surveyors. This year the program was hosted by Presidents from the regions of: Caserta, Latina, Matera, Bari and Teramo. The closing days were hosted by President Angelo Addante of the Provincial Board of Surveyors of Bari.

The program covered a range of interesting topics related to survey, land, and the built environment including discussions on photogrammetry, cadastre and valuation reflecting the FIG community interest (see program).
Particularly noteworthy was the archaeological sub-theme, “Archaeology and Architecture: The Future Has an Ancient Heart,” which emphasized the aspects of surveying that benefit the conservation and maintenance of historical sites and landscape. The program’s regional locations maximize the use of historic case studies and visits, including a study tour to UNESCO World Heritage site, Alberobello, Puglia. It is famous for its Trulli, unique limestone dwellings with conical roofs that have earned the town the World Heritage designation.

In her closing remarks, FIG President Diane Dumashie emphasized that sustainability in the context of people means demonstrating equality, diversity, and inclusion in our profession. She highlighted the importance of ensuring that no one is left behind and that our skills and training remain relevant to address global mega challenges. This is why the Italian International Summer Schools and other FIG member-led training programs are so vital.
The closing speeches also included contributions from Pietro Grimaldi (COIFA), Angelo Addante (President of college of Surveyors and Graduated Surveyors of Bari); Michele Picaro (Member of European Parliament’s Environment Committee); Paolo Biscaro (President of national council of Surveyors and Graduated Surveyors of Italy (CNGeGL), Cosmin Alin Popescu (University of Agriculture Sciences and Veterinary Medicine King Mihai I of Romania of Timisoara) and FIG Foundation President Bryn Fosburgh providing online closing remarks supported by John Hohol (FIG Foundation President Emeritus). With final words from Enrico Rispoli.
