         | Expert Group Meeting on Secure Land Tenure: "New legal 
		frameworks and tools" was held at the UN Headquarters in Gigiri, 
		Nairobi, November 10-12, 2004. The meeting was organised by FIG 
		Commission 7, UN-HABITAT, the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK) 
		and the Commonwealth Association of Surveying and Land Economy (CASLE). 
		It was supported by: Austrian Development Agency (ADA), Austria; 
		Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency, The Netherlands; Ministry of 
		Foreign Affairs, The Netherlands; and Deutsche Gesellschaft für 
		Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH, Germany.

        |  | As a result of the 2nd FIG Regional Conference “Urban-Rural 
		Interrelationship for Sustainable Environment”, which was held in 
		Marrakech, Morocco, 2–5 December 2003, FIG together with the partners 
		has published the Marrakech Declaration (Urban-Rural Interrelationship 
		for Sustainable Development). The Marrakech Declaration was launched at 
		the 2nd World Urban Forum in Barcelona, September 13-17, 2004 and 
		at the Symposium on Urban-Rural Interrelationship organised by 
		UN-Habitat in Nairobi during the World Habitat Day celebrations, October 
		1-4, 2004. The

    The 3rd FIG Regional Conference is organised by FIG, Ikatan Surveyor 
	Indonesia and Bakosurtanal in Jakarta 3-7 October 2004 was one more 
	successful event in the series of regional conferences introduced in 2001. 
	More than 350 delegates from 33 countries attended including more than 120 
	international participants. The attendance was good in consideration to 
	travel warnings of some countries prior the conference.

		Annual Meeting 2004 and international symposium on Modern Land 
		Consolidation (Amenagement Foncier Moderne) 
        were held in Clermont-Ferrand, France, 8-14 September 2004. Proceedings

          FIG Standards Network attend ISO TC 211 / CEN and TC 172 meetings 
		  in Italy and USAThe FIG Standards Network continues to be active, with its work 
		  ranging across all Commissions. Recent activity has included attending 
		  the meetings of 
          
		  ISO Technical Committee (TC) 172 / C6, where work on the testing 
		  of GPS is a particular concern for FIG, and attending the meetings of
          
		  ISO TC211 on Geographic Information. This Technical Committee is 
		  outputting a range of standards very relevant to surveyors and a 
		  one-day workshop on the subject is being planned for the working week 
		  in Cairo.
          From FIG Corporate Members: 3rd DiMENSIon in Paris, France, on 
		  28–29 October 2004The “3rd DiMENSIon" conference is a major industry event for 3D 
		  scanning. It brings together Trimble® 3D scanning and modelling system 
		  users, as well as a large number of non-users in various industries 
		  who are keen to learn about new developments with this advanced 
		  technology. The annual conference, which is now in its sixth year, 
		  will take place in the “Chalet de la Porte Jaune” in Paris, France, on

          FIG Council meets in Jakarta - new members from Asia and the 
		  PacificThe FIG Council and ACCO had their meetings in Jakarta during the 
		  3rd FIG Regional Conference. The ACCO representatives elected Matt 
		  Higgins from Australia as their new representative in the Council 
		  starting 1.1.2005. The Council accepted new member associations from 
		  Brunei Darussalam and United Arab Emirates (to be decided by the 
		  General Assembly in 2005), one new affiliate member from Peru, five 
		  new academic members (Oceania, West Indies, Moldova, Nigeria and 
		  Indonesia) and three new corporate members from USA, Georgia and 
		  Morocco. Report from the Council

          The Ordré des Topographes du Liban organised the 
		  2nd International Scientific Congress on surveying and topography at 
		  he Metropolitan Hotel in Beirut 21-23 September 2004. FIG was 
		  co-sponsoring this important event in the Arab world together with the 
		  Arab Union of Surveyors (AUS). The conference attracted totally about 
		  400 participants. The international participants represented 14 Arab 
		  countries and 7 European countries. FIG was represented by President 
		  Holger Magel, who gave a keynote presentation at the opening ceremony 
		  on "FIG 
		  Meets the Arab World of Surveyors" and by Klaus Rürup, Chair of 
		  FIG Commission 1. 
          
          FIG attended the 2nd World Urban Forum organised by UN-Habitat in 
		  Barcelona, Spain, September 13-17, 2004. The conference attracted 
		  almost 5,000 registered participants. FIG was represented at two 
		  networking events: The Challenges of City Financing: Habitat’s 
		  Professionals Forum  - 
          papers from 
		  this networking event now available.and 
          Land and Urban Poverty. At the Habitat Professionals Forum 
		  Steering Committee meeting Prof. Holger Magel was appointed as the new 
		  chair of the Steering Committee.
          
          
          The University of Nottingham was host to an International 
		  Federation of Surveyors’ (FIG) Conference from the 28 June to 1 July. 
		  The symposium was held as part of Working Group 6.4 “Engineering 
		  Surveys for Construction Works and Structural Engineering” and 
		  Task Force 6.1.1 “Measurements and Analysis of Cyclic Deformations 
		  and Structural Vibrations”. The Conference was the “First 
		  International Symposium on Engineering Surveys for Construction Works 
		  and Structural Engineering”. The conference was attended by 70 
		  people from a vast array of countries around the World.

          Bettina Petzold resigns as Vice President of FIGMs. 
          Bettina Petzold, Vice President 
		  of FIG has resigned from the FIG Council in June 2004 for personal 
		  reasons. The German member association DVW has decided that it will 
		  not appoint a new member to the Council in replacement of Ms. Petzold 
		  for 2004-2006. FIG got two new Vice Presidents at the General Assembly 
		  in Athens (Ken Allred 
    	  from Canada and Stig Enemark 
		  from Denmark).
          
          
          
          
      
          
          FIG Experiences the Olympic Spirit in Athens - FIG Working Week 
		  2004 in Athens, Greece, May 22-27, 2004

  | FIG Working Week 2004 was held in Athens, Greece May 22-27, 
			  2004. The theme of the working week was “The Olympic Spirit in 
			  Surveying”. The conference attracted more than 400 delegates 
			  from 67 countries. Together with the 1st National Conference of 
			  HARSE which attracted more than 250 delegates the Working Week was 
			  among the biggest FIG Working Weeks in the history.

		  starting with a plenary session with invited papers and followed by 29 
		  technical sessions and for symposia with several sessions so that the 
		  conference had 3-4 parallel sessions during the technical conference. 
		  The topics of the sessions were selected in the way that they covered 
		  interests of all ten FIG commissions promoting multi-professional 
		  approach. They also vary from policy issues to technical papers on the 
		  latest technology and to interesting case studies all over the world. 
		  More than 200 papers were presented in the technical sessions and 
		  workshops. The Working Week, the technical exhibition, technical 
		  tours and great social events were a big success thanks to the Local 
		  Organising Committee chaired by Mr. George Papavassiliou who 
		  was assisted by two Vice Chairs: Gerasimos Apostolatos and 
		  Polychronis Akriditis and Secretary General 
          Chryssy Potsiou. 
            
           
    Exhibition - Ancient Greek 
	Technology - Measuring Instruments. 
    During the FIG Working Week there was an exhibition organised in 
	collaboration with the Association for Ancient Greek Technology Studies. The 
	exhibition displayed some indicative technical achievements of the Ancient 
	Greece, together with models of several measuring devices used in topography 
	and astronomy.  
          
          
          The 
		  minutes of the General Assembly in Athens are now available on 
		  this web site. Hard copies of the minutes have been mailed to all 
		  members. The main decisions of the General Assembly include: 
            Ken Allred from Canada and Stig Enemark from 
			Denmark were elected to new Vice Presidents of FIG for term of

			be appointed in 2005.Prof. Jean-Marie Becker was appointed as an Honorary 
			Member of FIGNew member associations were adopted from Algeria, Cuba, Togo 
			and Tunisia. In addition three new affiliate members were recorded 
			from Belgium, Hungary and Saudi Arabia. Two new Corporate members 
			have joined during the past years as well as 9 new academic members.The General Assembly further endorsed the new definition of a 
			surveyor and the FIG information policy document.  
          
          Among the policy papers adopted by the General Assembly in Athens 
		  May 23, 2004 were the revised version of the
          
		  FIG Definition of the Functions of the Surveyor, which has been 
		  under preparation since last year. The second important document for 
		  the Federation is the
          
		  FIG Information Policy Concept that as well was endorsed by the 
		  General Assembly. This work to improve the FIG information delivery to 
		  its members will continue and the first action plan for the next 
		  months is already included in the final policy document. 
          
          
          
          
          
          
          
            
              |  | A Jubilee Seminar was organised 3 May 2004 to celebrate 30th 
			  Anniversary of the Chair of Land Readjustment and Land Development 
			  at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). It was at the same 
			  time arranged to celebrate the 60th birthday of Prof. Holger 
			  Magel and his 10th Anniversary as the President of the

 | The 2nd FIG Regional Conference - Urban-Rural Interrelationship for 
		Sustainable Environment was held in Marrakech, Morocco, December 2-5, 
		2003. The conference was organised by FIG and the Ordre National des 
		Ingénieurs Géomètres-Topographes ONIGT and it was co-sponsored by FAO, 
		UN-HABITAT, UNEP, UN ECA and the Arab Urban Development Institute and 
		the Arab Federation of Surveyors AUDI. The conference was attended by 
		420 participants from more than 40 countries. In addition to the 
		opening ceremony and three plenary sessions the technical programme 
		included 24 technical sessions in which almost 90 papers were presented. 
		The conference proceedings are available at
        
        www.fig.net/figtree/pub/morocco. They include totally almost 130 
		papers from 37 countries and the representatives of the United Nations. 
		All technical sessions were very well attended maximum attendance to 
		parallel sessions exceeded 120. Each day was concluded with a round 
		table discussion on the topics of the day.  The Conference further included:
