The workshop on “Innovative Technologies for an Efficient Geospatial Management of Earth Resources” was organised by FIG Commissions 5 and 6 together with the Mongolian Association of Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography (MAGPC) and the Siberian State Academy of Geodesy (SSGA) in Novosibirsk. FIG was represented by Vice President Rudolf Staiger (Germany) and Chair of FIG-Commission 6 Gethin Roberts (UK).

The 3-day workshop was divided into 5 Technical Sessions, 1 Poster Session and 1 Round-Table-Discussion. The participants were listening to more than 40 presentations, which were given in Mongolian, Russian or English Language. The simultaneous translation into English and Mongolian was on a high professional level and satisfied all needs.

“Early Warning and Crisis Management – the Role of GI and Spatial Data Infrastructure” was the title of the Round-Table-Discussion which was led by the former president of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) Milan Konecny from Czech Republique.

The workshop was the first of its kind in Mongolia and was very well organized by Dr. Enkhtuvshin Baatar – and his entire team: Dr.Sarangerel Usny-Ekh organized the exhibition, was responsible for the finances and managed the official invitations for the foreign delegations. Prof. Oyuntsetseg worked as a general editor of the proceedings (technical program) and invited over 100 delegates from 30 private surveying companies in Mongolia and involved over 20 students of the Mongolian University of Science & Technology as helping hands during this conference. And finally Bolormaa Byambatseren prepared the technical program and was responsible for the arrangements with the Conference hotel.

Dr. Enkhtuvshin Baatar who is also president of the young and vital Mongolian Association Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography (MAGPC) welcomed more than 150 participants not only from the region but also from a lot of other countries like France, Germany and United States. It should also be mentioned that one of the initiators of this event is Prof. Vladimir Seredovich (Novosibirsk, Russia) who welcomed among the Mongolian and Kazakh participants a lot of former students of the Siberian State Academy of Geodesy (SSGA).

This meeting was an excellent opportunity for the surveyors, geodesists and specialists for Geospatial Data from Central Asia to share knowledge and discuss future challenges with Colleagues from all over the world.
