FIG President Rudolf Staiger attended the 12th Expert Group Meeting on
	UN-GGIM
1-6 August 2022, New York, USA

				| | After the long COVID19 break almost all participants of the
Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management
expressed their happiness and relief to meet after three years
in person again.  The real stakeholders of UN-GGIM are all the national
governments under the roof of the United Nations. However the
International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) is among others one
of the recognized international Non-Governmental organisations
(NGO) and officially invited to be part of it as a so called
				observer. |

The first two days (1st and 2nd of August) were
reserved for side-events and meetings of sub groups. “Women in
Geospatial“ was a powerful opening of the first day. In
different parallel sessions the regional and thematic groups met
over the following two days. Other important topics were
“Geodetic Reference Frame for Sustainable Development”, “Digital
Twins”, standardization and ethics. The 3-day-consultation of the Committee of Experts started on the 3rd
of August, where all the reports and proposals are presented, discussed,
and finally decided. The main achievements over the last months can be
		briefly summarized.
Two new centres will be installed: the United Nations Global
Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre in Deqing (China) and the
United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence in Bonn (Germany).
The Integrated Geoinformation Framework (IGIF) and its implementation on
country level is of high priority on the UN-GGIM agenda.
UN-GGIM is part of ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council). It was
reported by the secretariat that ECOSOC will allocate more resources to
GGIM in the coming years. This is absolutely needed in order to support
the member states in an efficient and effective way.
Land administration is important when it comes to the fulfilment of
the SDGs. This expert group meeting proofed again that this (regarding
the content) the contribution of our profession. And it will remain
		important in the future.
The 13th UN-GGIM Meeting will be held 2-4 August 2023 in Ney York
		again at the UN-headquarters.
