Site visit to  Stavanger, Norway for FIG Working Week 2027
		10-11 September 2024, Stavanger Norway
		Edge of Norway
FIG President Diane Dumashie visited the local organising committee
in Stavanger, Norway together with Director Louise Friis-Hansen. The
meeting was two-fold - first of all getting the opportunity to meet with
the local organisers and to see propsed venues in Stavanger. Second, a full
day workshop was held with the City of Stavanger with a special focus on legacy.
Stavanger is in Norway called "Edge of Norway" due to its location at
the south-west coast of Norway. The FIG General Assembly 2024 elected
Edge of Norway - Stavanger - as destination for FIG Working Week 2027 (www.fig.net/fig2027)

		Legacy workshop
Legacy in regard to a FIG Conference is close to the heart of FIG. At
each Working Week and Congress we would like to leave a legacy locally
and to have the city included in the topics of surveying and the related
professions. We have several previous examples of legacy projects, such
as planting 100 trees outside the city of Kuala Lumpur at the FIG
Congress 2014, and the latest example in 2024 was a visit, planned by
the FIG Task Force on Diversity, to a primary school in Accra, Ghana
where a monument of a Globe was reveiled. This will hopefully inspire
young people to get interested in the topics of geography, surveying,
		geospatial etc.

The city of Stavanger had organised a legacy workshop, using FIG
Working Week 2027 as example on how to work with potential legacy
projects that can benefit both FIG, the local organisers and the City of
Stavanger. Jane Cunningham, Destinations International, was invited as
moderator of this workshop, and she gave a thought-provoking
introduction to how to work with legacy both from an association and a
destination point of view. Louise Friis-Hansen lined up the background
for the yearly FIG conferences (Working Weeks and Congresses) and showed
examples of previous legacy projects that FIG has worked with in
cooperation with conference destinations. FIG President Diane Dumashie
gave her input to the local organisers, who attended the workshop, on
the focus areas of FIG Council and what might be areas of interest for
		FIG when in Norway.
At the following brainstorm sessions and group work a lot of
creativity was shown from both the city and the local organisers from
Norway coming up with various ideas for legacy projects that can benefit
both them, the city and FIG.

A city tour was organised to finalise the day in the beautiful city
		of Stavanger.

Site visit and meeting with the Local Organising Committee
On the following day a meeting was held with the local organising
committe who are already in full swing with the preparations for the
Working Week. With the potential lecacy projects the conference will
cover many topics of interest under the main title of "The Power of
Where for the new Generation". Being located right next to the sea
several topics such as Blue Ocean and Surveying the Arctic. Further to
this Stavanger is working on SmartCity initiatives, Marin base maps in
the coastal Zone in Norway and knowledge base for sustainable
		development of Norwegian coastal communities.

Conference venue is planned to be the Stavanger Forum and Expo which
is located central in the city. One good thing about Stavanger is that
all is available in short distances. There are hotels right around the
Stavanger Forum, and it is located close to the city centre and also the
		airport.
